Caz will always be remembered fondly as the life and soul of the party who lived life to the full, had endless energy and a vibrant spirit. She was also a loyal and loving friend with a big generous heart that will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.

During the last 20 years in Koh Samui Caz became passionate about the environment, wildlife and conservation. And, since she was the sort of person who would much rather people spend their money on a useful cause than flowers and wreaths, we’ve decided to help raise funds for something close to her heart that we can remember her by.

The Samui Elephant Sanctuary opened its doors last year to take care of elderly elephants and those rescued from the tourist and logging trades. Caz was delighted that this new facility was being established on her island home.

The Sanctuary mostly raises money by allowing groups of tourists to visit twice a day but they don’t allow visitors to ride or wash the elephants. They simply come to observe and learn about the work being done to protect them.

It is currently operating on a rented plot of land that is close to a main road and residential developments. It’s not ideal and the rent keeps going up.

So the Sanctuary owners are in the process of moving to a new 40 acre block of land up in the hills behind Chaweng where it is cooler and quieter with more spacious natural surroundings and a natural water hole.

Rescuing and keeping elephants is expensive. The Sanctuary needs funding for large enclosures to house the elephants at night. The cost for building an enclosure for four elephants is approximately 1 million baht (25,000).

Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to build an enclosure named in Caz’s honour. This will enable us to support something that she loved and build a place for us to visit and remember her by.
