Story
Elisabeth's Grand Tour
My aim is to visit every one of 68 students who are taking advanced level Community Governance courses this year - 2022. I will be visiting all four corners of England and Wales where our students work as officers of parish, town and community councils supporting vitally important work for local communities.
The training, education and professional development of officers is extremely valuable for local councils as they tackle the challenges facing local communities including climate action, local democracy, service delivery and devolution from higher tier councils. Some councils, especially those with small populations, struggle to afford the cost of training and education. Although great value for money at £6500 per level, our Community Governance courses are expensive, like any other university-level course. Some potential students need our help so the Society of Local Council Clerks is setting up an educational charity to provide bursaries, scholarships and other tools for supporting professional development in the sector and to promote the value of training and education.
My sponsored Grand Tour aims to raise funds for the charity. For a blog following the tour starting on March 10th, SLCC | Elisabeth Skinner and her Grand Tour . You can also follow me on Twitter @lisabethski .

2 months agoI am on the road again - this time to the south east. I have visited two students in Sussex and three in Kent over the last two days. Tomorrow I am in Surrey and Oxfordshire on my way home after three days away by which time I will have visited 43 students in total. I am delighted that the Staffordshire branch of the Society has donated £100. I wonder if other branches might consider this - the cause is great for the sector.

3 months agoI've finished the second stage of my Grand Tour and have now visited 36 students out of 68. I thoroughly enjoyed East Anglia and catching up with students one by one. The next stage starts in mid June - this time to the south east (Surrey, Sussex and Kent).

3 months agoI am now on the second phase of my tour. I have visited 6 students in the last 2 days in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. I enjoyed really stimulating discussions around this year's assignments and have seen a variety of parishes from scattered rural hamlets north of the Thames in Oxfordshire to leafy villages under pressure of development and on the edge of Greater London. Today I start near Cambridge and finish on the Essex coast! Do check the blog: https://www.slcc.co.uk/?s=Elisabeth+Skinner
