Acting has influenced my ability to connect and view people differently. As acting is the embodiment of another character it means emotions, environment and stories have become relatable and significant in my everyday life. I enjoy channelling different characters, adopting their mannerisms, attitudes, thoughts, and feelings and expressing this to an audience. The thoughts and feelings of a character are a key part in building their individual personality and acts as a stimulus for their actions. I find the exploration of a character to be an opportunity to use my own experiences and instincts but to also engage and challenge myself with new emotions and connect to the character. I first became interested in acting as a child when my academic abilities didn’t keep up with my imagination. Through performing to peers and teachers I could feel accomplishment and take pride in, something that completely relied on my forever growing mind. I found acting to be a source of energy that I could feed off other people and create an environment which was inclusive rather than competitive. As I’ve become older performing gives me a sense of understanding of the world I know. The unique opportunity to experience and analyse a character has made me appreciate individuals and observe how they react or behave and perhaps use that as stimulus for any future performances, to make a truthful character and one that is relatable for the audience. My long standing interest in acting happened when during my first theatre experience as a young audience member I was fixated on the idea that there were real people telling a story and I instinctively wanted to be a part of it. From there I have been involved in youth theatres which has given me a creative platform as well as enjoying other young actors work which has broadened my creative diversity. Through attending a youth theatre, I have a deeper consciousness of the arts and the dedication needed to be successful. I quickly learnt that I and the other members joined for various reasons such as theatre experience, socialising or expressing themselves in a like-minded environment- having met these people I’ve become more aware of what theatre can offer on an inclusive and professional scale. Acting has given me a space to live out characters and understand what makes them work which has sparked an interest in human behaviour and to not take everything at face value. I gained huge amounts of confidence through attending a youth theatre as the support encouraged my ability to experiment and have freedom within the arts as it was a space for contributing and every involvement we had was valued. I have further been involved with student films which encouraged my aspiration to be acting in a professional environment but also the drive to create new pieces of work to add to the constantly growing industry; during these projects, I was able to experience acting for screen and enjoy challenges such as working with new people in an unfamiliar environment and how to adapt or familiarise myself to produce a high standard of work. As a hobby, I frequently write and read poetry and as language is a key part in acting I can appreciate the dynamics in words and the personal impact they may have on an individual. I further find poetry to be a unique way to express a feeling or an idea in such few words but to evoke curiosity or a relationship between the lines, this is something that as a performer I am conscious to achieve. I regularly watch new pieces of theatre which keeps my aspirations alive as well as exploring different genres and learning from actors. Through my college education I have gained knowledge on theatrical practises and have had experience with different styles of acting. Completing a short course in acting would give me the immersive training I need. The working Class actors need more accessibility!
