Story
Elizabeth Raffald was an amazing woman who lived in 18th century Manchester and is buried here at St Mary's in Stockport and her grave is unmarked. Planning consent has been approved for a plaque to be installed on The Arden Arms, a pub that was built by her family.
She was an innovator, educator, businesswoman and benefactor and produced an 800 recipe cookbook 100 years before Mrs Beeton. She also produced the first ever trade directory for Manchester and supported two newspapers, ran two pubs, set up the first servants' agency in Manchester and innovated many dishes we take for granted now.
For more information about her go to www.elizabethraffaldsociety.org or www.suzeapple.co.uk. A book about her is available in the Stockport Museum, from the Stockport Heritage Trust or on Amazon.

8 years agoThank you for your generous donation towards the cost of the plaque. The full amount has been raised thanks to tremendous generosity from Olga Shipperbottom in memory of her husband Roy, Connie Jackson's family in her memory and Robinson's brewery. I am hoping to order the plaque before the end of 2016 for it to be installed in January 2017. Thank you once again for contributing to this memorial to an incredible woman.

I discovered Elizabeth Raffald in 2014 after living in this area for over 30 years and feel it is an omission from our heritage that she has not been commemorated. I give talks about her and have written a booklet about her, to bring her to people's notice.
