Story

Hello!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Ellen Smithies and I'm currently a student at the University of Nottingham (though not for much longer - eek!). Every couple of years I raise money for great causes by shaving my head, and this year I am raising money for Lauren's Place, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to raise awareness and support young people struggling with their mental health, by shaving my head on the 10th February!

The organisation was founded in 2014 after a close friend of mine committed suicide after struggling with her mental health for several years. She was 17. She was failed by gaps in mental health provision in the UK, and was one of many who suffered because of the gap between child and adult support.

Currently, funding for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service equates to just 0.7% of the total NHS budget, just 7% of mental health expenditure and with CAMHS turning away approximately 25% of children and young people referred to them, it’s time something was done -- Young Minds, 2017

In the past Lauren's Place has run Wellbeing workshops and helped provided one-to-one counselling for a number of young people who would otherwise have struggled to access the support they needed. I want to help continue this amazing work, and hope that you will help me do so.

Please note: This page is being run as a crowdfunding campaign because Lauren's Place is not a registered charity. All donations received will be donated to Lauren's Place at the end of the fundraising period, and I will upload proof of that when it happens.
