Story
As head girl, I want to get members of the school to learn a fun, versatile skill which we then all combine to help people in our community. That skill is… knitting. I wouldn’t be surprised if you are feeling a little dubious but I’m hoping I can talk you through the logistics so that you become as passionate about the prospect of the project as I am.
The premise of my idea is getting as many people in the school to knit a small square, roughly 15 by 15 cms, which would then be compiled to make blankets for homeless people in Trafford and Manchester. I would work closely with a charity, such as Cornerstone, to distribute the blankets. Assuming we can compile around 1080 squares, we could make about 7-8 blankets. To assemble the blankets, I like the idea of maybe starting a club which will help people to mingle with the other years and make new friends as they put the blankets together.
What I think is good about my project is that it gets the whole school involved, we can also get people’s grandparents and people from the local nursing home to contribute and it helps those in need, who will benefit more from a warm blanket than 20 pence in a cup. In addition, in my opinion, knitting is very relaxing and meditative, which can be very beneficial to your mental health and wellbeing, it is especially important that in a school filled with such hard workers we learn ways to stop and take time for ourselves. I’d like to think that my project has benefits for everyone involved and it is a project that is very close to my heart because I love to knit and I want to help those in need.
