Story

In August 2018 Emilia was diagnosed with developmental dysplaysia of her left hip (DDH). This a condition usually picked up on at birth or in early years. Despite concerns and being told on several occasions there was nothing wrong, last august we finally managed to get an Xray in which we discovered Emilia had very little hip socket and her leg was much higher above her hip.

On 7th january 2019 Emilia underwent major surgery to rebuild her hip socket using bone from her femur. (Pelvic and Femoral Osteomy and Open Reduction). She now has to remain in SPICA (full body) cast for a minimum of 10 weeks to allow the hip to heal.

As many of your are already aware this has had a major impact on Emilias day to day life as she is now unable to walk or go to toilet for herself. Occupational therapists from the Birmingham Childrens Hospital have managed to provide a hospital bed, table and buggy. We have purchased a bean bag but as she is unable to sit up due to the positioning of the cast we are finding it extremely difficult to get her comfortable to eat meals and do her schoolwork, daily activities.

The brilliant people at Smirthswaite have designed a table that allows children to sit up specifically in the SPICA cast. We would love to be able to provide this for Emilia for the remainder of her time in her cast. The tables are available to hire for around £170 for 3 months or buy for just under £500. If we were fortunate enough to raise the entire funds to buy one we would love to be able to give it out to families in a similar situation. We are super grateful for anything you can give.
