Story
My name is Emily Wellfare, I'm 27 years old. I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia back in 2012 at the tender age of 21. Since then I have had 11 rounds of chemo, each round demading me to stay in hospital as an in patient for around a month, two bone marrow transplants, total body radiotherapy, over 50 blood/platelet transfusions along with many other drugs and infusions that there would be too many to list.
In April 2018 after two years in remission my cancer came back for the 4th time. We were all devastated as I had already been through so much and I was nowhere near giving up yet but with such aggressive cancer I was told by my consultant I was now terminal and there would no longer be a curative option. Devastating news is an understatement at the age of 27 and having recently gotten engaged.
The Drs mentioned a new trial called CAR T which was specifically for people in my situation. However it was not up and running in the UK yet as the trials had only just finished. They were not sure how long it would take for the drugs to be released or if they ever would be but this would be my only real chance at living over 6months to a year and possibly a cure! We kept hoping the drug would be passed but were not sure if it ever would. Then on the 5/9/18 CAR T was all over the news IT HAD BEEN PASSED! I couldn't believe it! It was the best news I could have hoped for!
The downside is that this treatment is very expensive around £282,000 and the NHS have said they will only fund 15-25 patients under the age of 25 a year. At 27 it is unlikely the NHS will fund my treatment so we're trying to raise as much money as possible so I can have the tools to carry on fighting for my life. I'm so not ready to give up yet and it would be such a shame if I fought all my life for this for it to come down to the fact we couldn't afford the treatment avaliable.
If for any reason treatment can't go ahead the money will be given to bloodwise for blood cancer research.
