Night is a big beautiful black neutered male cat, who I foster long term for a small local animal sanctuary. He was placed with me for rehabilitation 3 years ago, due to his unpredictable nature. Although he is 5 years old now, Night was placed in the sanctuary when he was only 2 years old. According to his last owners, Night had been in 3-4 homes before they took him. After a short time, they then took him to a vet, gave them this small amount of info and told the vet to “put him to sleep.” Obviously, the vet refused as he was young and healthy. The vet found him a place in the sanctuary, where he remained for about 6 months. Whilst at the sanctuary his unpredictable side appeared, causing them to name him “Black Knight” and they were all extremely careful not to be in contact with him. So he became isolated and withdrawn. The first thing I did was give him a name: Night, cause he is as dark, mysterious and beautiful as the Night. No more “evil Black Knight”. He has separation anxiety and doesn’t appear to understand how to act and react to any stimuli in his environment. One big thing I noticed was that he did not seem to know how to play, at all! He would just sit and stare at the other cats. Just in the last 12-18 months alone, he has made huge progress with these. It has now been discovered that he has a narrowing of a disc, due to degeneration, which would cause excruciating pain. So he will be on medication for the rest of his life. Night now has 2 options. He either goes back to a life of solitude or stay here but confined to a run.
