My name is Katie and I have opened this just giving page for my sister Emma. Emma has a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2 (SMA). This has meant she has had to used an electric wheelchair since she was 2 years old and receives care to support her with all aspects of daily life. Despite this, all of you that know my sister, will know she is fiercely independent and having SMA has never stopped her doing anything she sets her mind to. Emma is often too proud to ask for help, which is why I have taken upon myself to raise this money. Recently Emma has made a massive decision, she has stepped (forgive the pun!) away from social housing and bought her own property. This has been a trying and costly few months, trying to adapt the property so that it meets her needs and provides her with the independence she had within social housing. Frustratingly yesterday Emma was told the 2 existing door opening systems in the social housing property (which she planned to take with her) are too old to move and that the cost of 2 new ones would fall on her! They are £1500 each and the reason for Emma needing 2 is one for Emma's main door and one for Emma's internal front door. Without the door entry systems Emma can't independently enter or exit her property, which takes a lot of her independence away. Despite being told this Emma didn't moan,get cross or have a melt like most would have, she just added it to her list of a thousand things to save for. As this is so important and without them it has such a massive impact, I wanted to help and I would like you to help too.
