Just six months ago, we believed Sophie had reached the end of her cancer journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2024. After enduring surgery, fertility treatment, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy, and a long recovery, she had finally begun rebuilding her life.

Following a year away from work to focus on treatment and regain her strength, Sophie dedicated herself to achieving a lifelong dream. She spent the next year working tirelessly to earn a place in the Fire Service full time, refusing to let cancer define her future. Her determination paid off, and she proudly started her dream job.

Just three months into her new full time role, Sophie finally took the holiday to Florida that had been postponed from 2024 because of her cancer treatment. It was meant to be a celebration of everything she had overcome.

Instead, it became the beginning of another devastating chapter.

Within hours of arriving in America, Sophie suffered two seizures and was rushed to hospital. During those terrifying 12 hours, doctors discovered a cancerous lump in her chest wall. She was forced to return home immediately, but not before receiving an initial medical bill of £3,000. Since returning to the UK, a further bill of more than £22,000 has also been issued.

Back in the UK, Sophie underwent further scans and tests, confirming the heartbreaking news that her breast cancer had returned and spread to her chest wall. The diagnosis is secondary breast cancer, meaning the disease is no longer curable, but it is treatable.

Once again, Sophie is facing treatment to shrink/get rid of the tumour in her chest wall. After that, she will require a targeted- therapy every month for the rest of her life to help control the cancer cells in her lymph nodes to stop the spread of the disease. These treatments are not a permanent solution. Over time, the cancer can become resistant, meaning Sophie will need to move on to different treatments if they do stop working.

After discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene a decade ago- Sophie has faced more than anyone should ever have to endure at this age. She fought through every obstacle with incredible courage, determined to get her life back. To have that hope shattered so soon after finally achieving her dream is truly heartbreaking.

Despite everything, Sophie continues to face each day with remarkable strength, courage and determination. She refuses to give up, even though she knows this will now mean lifelong medications and a new lifestyle to adapt to.

Sophie’s aim is to return to work as soon as she is deemed fit to do so by medical professionals and begin rebuilding her life for the second time.

We are currently planning to complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk again but in the opposite direction alongside a 24 hour ‘wodathon’, which is a workout every hour on the hour completed in the CrossFit gym Sophie attends. Both will be taking place in September and October. Dates tbc.
