Story

We have partnered with Days for Girls Uganda (DFG) a leading international organisation, who produce sustainable sanitary kits as well as provide training in menstrual hygiene management.

After the success of our first outreach in June 2019, we plan to go to Northern Uganda to Maruzi Seed Secondary School for our second outreach with a student population of 800.

Problem Addressed

Through our own research as well as DfG’s previous projects in Uganda, we became increasingly aware of issues around menstruation for school girls. We realised that there was a need for education on menstrual health management, as well as access to affordable & sustainable pads in rural Uganda.

Most school girls in rural Uganda have little or no access to age-appropriate information on menstrual health, or pads that are accessible, effective, comfortable, affordable and safe to use. Girls either resort to missing school by staying indoors due to a lack of access to materials to manage their menstruation, or use unhygienic alternatives such as old rags, toilet paper, banana leaves or nothing at all.

This hinders their daily activities, and can have potential negative implications on their reproductive health, leads to stigma and embarrassment as clothing are stained and are humiliated especially by boy peers, which they said isolates them. It also affects work performance which limits their ability to engage in education, which in turn increases the risk of school absence and dropout rates, as they are missing crucial days of school every month.

Young girls deserve safe, accessible, affordable and dignified solutions to manage their menstruation.

Our approach

Your contribution towards our menstrual health management project will do the following:

* Help us distribute locally manufactured, sustainable and washable pads and sanitary hygiene tools including underwear to all girls. These pads can last up to three years, providing it is taken care of correctly which we will train the girls in how to do.

*Skills workshops to teach girls how to make your own reusable sanitary pad and bag, with tools provided.

*Educational workshops for both girls and boys on menstruation, puberty and sexual health. Through these interactive workshops we also aim to have honest conversations and correct misinformation & cultural taboos on menstruation.
