Weʼve raised £4,206 to educate the world to love our Oceans. Channel Island Relay Swim around Jersey July 2019

Funded on Monday, 7th October 2019

    Story

I am raising money to educate the world to love our Oceans.

Last year ocean swimmer grand masters Dave and Karen Quartermain at Uswim Adventure approached me with the flattering offer to join a 3x swimmer relay around Jersey. Jersey?

Where is Jersey? Is it in the UK? Is it in France? From a map..., it's hard to tell.

One thing you can be sure: IT IS IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL. And so, it is right up my alley. So I joined Dave Randall and Graham Hadfield to form the Jersey-Chaps: three amigos relay swim around Jersey in early July..., that will come soon enough.

The appeal of swimming in the English Channel is irresistible: cold water, unpredictable weather, huge tides, white horses, the odd seal, plenty of jelly fish, maritime traffic..., plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic wrappers. Hang on! That plastic was never in the allure of ocean swimming!!! Who threw it all to the sea?

We need to act now to stop this unhealthy relation we have with single use plastic. See how rooted it is now in our way of life. Why? Is it just because it is cheap? Shame on us! We need to re-educate ourselves. Start simple: do what you can, but commit to it. Start next time you go out for a takeaway meal, bring your own tubs and bags, reject brand new single-use plastic, if the vendor says "can't do", then walk away: that will educate them.

Good news is there are lots of people already caring for our education and our relation with the ocean. Check the web pages of this charity I want to support with your sponsor money:

    - COBI in Mexico; their work in educating fishermen, their families, local authorities, government, tourists..., it is inspiring. Their tireless work can only be fueled by their love of the Ocean. We have a lot to learn from them. They make me believe all is not lost!! We can put it right. The future is full of hope.

Please sponsor my charity swim to help them continue their good work. It will be my privilege to pass on your sponsor money to COBI in one single donation after the swim at the end of July.

Love our Oceans I am honoured to be associated with the efforts of COBI to educate us all to love our oceans. The Jersey RELAY swim raised over 100,000 mexican pesos for COBI. And the adventure will continue into 2020 with a trip to Baja California to meet one of the communities where COBI works I can only hope I am worthy of swimming in the same waters where these fishermen fish and those whales come for winter; in a sea full of love for the ocean. Let's start the new year with good news everywhere! God Bless

Guys, it's been a week since the swim and the donations for the sponsored swim keep coming strong. Four weeks ago I thought that raising £1,000 was going to be a tough target, and look what you have done! Your generosity is overwhelming. I am touched by your "why stop there" attitude. Goes to show we can indeed achieve a lot when we set our minds to it. I believe we can turn the tide on single use plastic. So, for all of you who are putting your faith and money in me and my efforts to support COBI, I salute you as fellow STEWARDS OF THE SEA

I grew up swimming in and out the waves of Acapulco Bay. Then went to swim for Mexico during my teens. I discovered my love for outdoor swimming in England during the late 90's. I swam the English Channel in 2007. Happy to swim in the waters of the English Channel anytime!
