Story
There are over 600,000 people living with Epilepsy in the UK, yet it is still a conditions which is little understood outside the people who have Epilepsy or help treat the condition. In Berkshire alone there could be as many as 12000 people living with Epilepsy many of these are under control with a variety of drug treatments. But for around 30 percent drugs do not help and many have regular seizures. Because of the nature of Epilepsy many people feel isolated and lonely. There carers often feel they have no support and social interaction can become limited which can also lead to depression, which in turn causes further loneliness and isolation.
The purpose of the charity we are setting up is to achieve the following:
Give support to those living with Epilepsy their needs and the needs of their carers.
To help educate the community and organisations eg schools colleges, about epilepsy.
To facilitate a sense of community and ensure people don't feel isolated. Bring people together in a social environment where they can feel safe and supported. Developing friendships and a realisation that the problems they have are similar to others and they are not alone.
To give support to the newly diagnosed to come to terms with their diagnosis and help where necessary to guide them to organisations that can help eg with financial support if required.
To raise funds to support the above.
