Story
Mediterranean Steps is a path and nature trail in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. One of the footpaths of Gibraltar. The path is located entirely within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and was built by the British military but is now used by civilians as a pedestrian route linking Martin's Path to Lord Airey's Battery near the summit of Rock of Gibraltar. The steps zig-zag up the Rock from the end of Martin's Path to near the summit. Mediterranean Steps is a steep, at times arduous and challenging, walk and is not for people without a head for heights and of reasonable fitness.
About Eric
Eric is a Gibraltarian disabled person (wheelchair user) who has being at the forefront of raising awareness of disabilities issues in Gibraltar from a very young age. Eric contacted Polio when he was eight years old and has been disabled ever since. He has been involved in numerous disability charities and campaigns throughout the years and helped numerous individuals and families. During the years, Eric has campaigned for various issues and successfully seen them through to fruition. Notwithstanding his disability, Eric lives a ‘full’ life. He is married, has two children and seven grandchildren. Eric is a keen photographer and is regularly seen covering numerous community and sporting events. Eric is as much an artist of photography as he is an accomplished and talented musician. Eric, who is retired, spent most of his working career in Customer Services. His involvement in all these spheres of society demonstrate that disability should not be an obstacle to contributing fully to the community.
The Aim
The aim is to raise £100,000 in aid of the Special Needs Action Group (SNAG). The challenge will promote awareness on issues affecting persons with special or additional needs in Gibraltar. This challenging route is a physical representation of the obstacles and barriers that disabled people face on a daily basis. The ups and downs, the obstacles, the need for assistance at certain moments in ones life and the sheer determination that it sometimes takes to fulfil your dreams and reach personal goals.
The Challenge
So by now you are asking yourselves, what’s Eric going to do? Well, on the 24th September 2022, Eric is going to climb the Med Steps, unassisted, using his arms to push himself all the way up. Yes, Eric who is a full-time wheelchair user, is climbing up Med Steps using only his arms! If you have any doubt of the enormity of the challenge, try walking up Med Steps this week or visit (http://www.visitgibraltar.gi/see-anddo/military-history/mediterranean-steps-12) to see some photos of the path.EM Power Challenge.
