Story
For over a century, the three Church of England parish churches, Holy Trinity, St Barnabas, and St James, have been the beating heart of Littleborough. These vital sanctuaries are the very backdrop of our collective history. So many families across our local community have walked through these doors to celebrate weddings, welcome new life through christenings, and find solace during funerals.
Today, these historic spaces face financial challenges. Contrary to what many believe, parish churches receive no government funding and central Church of England funds do not cover day-to-day parish running costs or building maintenance. Instead, our local churches rely almost entirely on the voluntary giving and fundraising of our own community. This is why your backing is needed. Without the financial support of the village, these pillars of Littleborough simply cannot survive.
In a powerful bid to protect our heritage, local legend Ernie Travis (Littleborough’s aerial and telecommunications engineer) is taking on an incredible endurance challenge throughout June and July 2026, running a massive 140 kilometres to raise the funds needed to keep these three buildings open.
By sponsoring Ernie's monumental summer run, you can help:
- Keep the Doors Open: Ensure essential structural maintenance, heating and building repair costs are met.
- Continue Our Traditions: Guarantee future generations can still use these landmarks for life's milestones.
Every single pound pushes Ernie Travis closer to the finish line and keeps our churches open.Sponsor the Run Online Here.
Alternatively you are very welcome to attend any of the churches to drop off physical sponsorships.
Regular progress updates will be posted over both months so Littleborough can track Ernie’s journey. Let’s unite as a community, back our local engineer throughout June and July, and keep these spiritual anchors thriving!
