Last summer, my family was given the news all dread. Unbelievably, cancer had reached our door and none were prepared for the journey ahead. Kevin David Evans, my lovely Uncle, went in to the doctors with what he thought was a bad case of 'man flu' and in turn left with AML.

Acute Myeloid Lukeumia is a cancer that affects the blood, specifically white blood cells that affect the immune system significantly. Nevertheless, my Uncle remained brave, determined and utterly ruthless throughout his illness, even managing to keep his gorgeous sense of humour which so characterised his lovely existence. However, after rounds of chemotherapy, injections, illness, infections, waiting for answers, bad news, hopeful news and finally fatal news, my lovely Uncle did eventually lose his battle against his cancer. Though peaceful, his departure took heavy blows to our family... leaving behind a grieving mother, partner, baby brother and children as well as all his extended family and friends, whom all were touched by his character and personality.

Likewise, only weeks before, another beautiful and bright character was also lost to Lukeumia... Sandra Samwell. A ball of energy, creativity and class, bursting with enthusiasm for helping others. Sandra's glowing light was aggressively extinguished in under a month by the merciless disease, yet lives on in the memories and lives of so many whom she touched and blessed with her presence.

But a battle lost does not mean the war is over.

I maintain: be the change you want to see in the world. I want to see the world PROACTIVELY tackling the global crisis of cancer. I want to assist in the development of care for not only the patients, but all the victims of cancer including the family and friends of the patient who all, hand in hand, take the scary and emotional cancer journey. I want to make sure our loved ones do no pass away in vain and turn this suffering into something positive. This is why, I'm a brave shaver.
