Weʼre raising £1,500 to Support WTBB and WYWS invest in essential outdoor equipment and group leadership and safety training for the benefit of all members.
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
Whilst I’ve always been an active person, I started piling on the weight. This , I think, was stress related, I work in a highly pressurised job with lots of responsibility and sometimes unrealistic deadlines (although, I must say, this is not uncommon in todays society so I know I’m not alone) but eating was my comfort. Living away from home at times and staying in hotels didn’t help. My knees seriously started to feel the strain.
Also, I’d moved to the beautiful Brecon Beacons in 2011 and my weight prevented me from fulfilling my passion for the first 5 years, walking the glorious mountains that were literally on my doorstep.
I decided I’d had enough. If I couldn’t walk the mountains then I wasn’t ME and at 53, time wasn’t going to wait for me. I also had in mind that I’d lost my sister when she was 53 so that kind of hit home too.
so, I joined Slimming World and my local gym in January 2016 and claimed my life back.
Today, I am almost 5 and a half stone lighter and have fulfilled so many dreams in that time - having walked all over the Brecon Beacons (several times!), I now feel I know my surroundings intimately and feel I’m so lucky to have found an area of beautiful Wales that gives me the same sense of freedom and of being home as Scotland always does.
Did I mention that I also joined a Facebook Group called Walking the Brecon Beacons? Now, I wouldn’t say I was anti-social (those who know me will vouch for that) but I did enjoy my solo walking but being a member of this group really helped me integrate, at first online with a community and then I started to meet these people in real life! And then ........ I started to partner with them by setting up my own group called Walk Your Way Slim to encourage people to enjoy the health benefits that I was finding through both walking and people interactions. I am now a trained Hill and Moorland Guide and qualified emergency outdoor first aider but why stop here ........ I’m going to EVEREST BASE CAMP in November 2019 and I’d like to do this for Walking the Brecon Beacons Group.
So, this is a good news story so why do I ask for your support? Because:
a) I owe a world of gratitude to the WTBB group and I think how the admin have given their time voluntarily to allow others to see incredible routes, safely, is honourable
b) I appreciate that their past investment of donations to train members to increase their skills and knowledge is honourable
c) In a world where community is deminishing, this is a real community with a wealth of knowledge on all things mountain related but a bunch of people who have kept their sense of humour since it’s inception 2 years ago.
I hope you can see why I’d like to show my appreciation and also feel in some small way that we’ve made a difference to the safety of walking the Brecon Beacons but also to the fitness of many lives.
