Story
Ewan Ramsay has been the CEO of IRRI since 2014. However, in September 2019 he suffered a brain haemorrhage and spent six months in hospital. The work of IRRI went on hold during the early stages of Ewan’s recovery and he picked up the role again in 2023, when he started to reestablish relationships and projects in Malawi.
IRRI is a charitable organisation which is dedicated to addressing the world’s resource challenges through fostering international partnerships that create practical, sustainable solutions to pressing global resource issues. Many of its projects are delivered in Malawi, with examples being the provision and installation of solar panels in homes, schools and hospitals which have enhanced the educational opportunities for children and improved the health and mortality rates for mothers and babies.
Ewan is a well regarded member of his local community and supports individuals and businesses across the local area. He is an avid supporter of the Linton Hotspurs FC, a small, community oriented football club, whose history reflects the broader tradition of village and amateur football in Scotland.
Originally formed in 1928, the club competed in regional leagues and cup competitions, but due to challenges with funding, facilities and player retention it was disbanded in 1971. This was a huge loss to the local community and in 2008 it was reformed and now serves as an important part of West Linton’s sporting and community culture. It has a huge focus on development and sustainability rather than rapid progression up the football pyramid. That being said, they are a growing club, with over 200 playing members, featuring men and women, boys and girls, providing opportunities to develop within a structured , fun, safe and enjoyable environment , and have had relative success on and off the pitch in recent times.
IRRI is fundraising in collaboration with Linton Hotspurs FC, to raise funds for local and international projects focusing on sustainability. On 6th June 2026, Ewan will undertake a 6.5 mile walk around the West Linton golf course and Westwater Dam.
The funds he will raise will be split between sustainability projects led by both IRRI in Malawi and Linton Hotspurs FC. IRRI wish to progress supporting the expansion of solar panels in homes in Malawi and West Linton Hotspurs will plant a number of trees around their football ground.
The West Water Walk on Saturday 6th June aims to raise £5,000. Everyone is welcome to join Ewan for all or part of the walk, starting at the Village Green at 9am.
