Weʼve raised £1,620 to raise funds for the Exmoor Pony Project which helps to safeguard Exmoor ponies and encourages better treatment, training and understanding

    Exmoor National Park, UK
Funded on Wednesday, 31st October 2018

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

Our Exmoor Pony Project (est 2013) helps to safeguard, promote and improve welfare and opportunities for endangered breed Exmoor ponies. There are over 30 Exmoor ponies in our direct care and we're looking to raise funds to continue and evolve this work. Can you help?

Our main areas of focus include: 1) Helping to safeguard endangered breed Exmoor Ponies. 2) Encouraging better pony handling, treatment & understanding. 3) Giving Exmoor ponies good opportunities and promoting the breed. 4) Campaigning for pony welfare and management improvements.

There aren't many Exmoor ponies born in Exmoor National Park each year - and every Exmoor pony is important. Sometimes they need a helping hand to find the right opportunities.

We’re working with other moorland farmers and herd owners and together, we're improving breeding practices, moorland & pony management, communication & promotion, and helping to safeguard Exmoor pony genetics.

Who are we? The project is run by us, Nick and Dawn Westcott, from our farm in the Porlock Vale, Exmoor, and a significant number of the ponies would not be here today without this project.

Running the Exmoor Pony Project is a challenge which requires a lot of work and resource. We’re raising funds to help maintain high standards of care and management of the ponies, replace worn out equipment and progress their training - so they can all benefit.

Although an important and endangered British Native pony breed, the market value for Exmoor ponies is low and being wild-born, intelligent and independent thinking - taming and training the ponies takes the time it takes. Costs cannot be easily covered but the ponies are worth it. So the Exmoor Pony Project needs sponsorship. If you'd like to help fund our work, we - and the ponies - appreciate your support.

    * The Exmoor pony breed is listed as endangered and ‘In Decline’ on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s 2018 Danger List and there is a sharp decline in the number of female foals being registered.

Thank you for your support! We really appreciate it.

Part of our work is to help promote the moorland Exmoor pony breeders and assist them in finding good homes for their foals. I've recently made a short film about the autumn pony gatherings and foals looking for good opportunities this autumn.
