Story
Primary teachers receive state-funded free training on how to use pre-written maths teaching schemes. These schemes enable some teachers to meet the needs of the children they teach but they don't work for everyone.
There have always been teachers who could just teach - brilliantly and fluently - straight from the curriculum and whose children made incredible progress. Between 2014 & 2019 maths education expert Rebecca Hanson has worked with them to capture the essence of what it is these teachers know and do and to learn to share their skills through in-service training. This (Authentic Maths Expert Primary Maths Teacher) training went through four generations of re-writes and involved over five hundred teachers and teaching assistants, leading to eight 2-hour training sessions - one for teachers of each year group (age 4-10) and one for teaching assistants working with children aged 7-11.
This training helps teachers who still choose to follow pre-written schemes of work to more deeply understand the essence of what they're doing, so that when children struggle, they can quickly diagnose precisely what's wrong and can rapidly fix the problem. It also gives the schools and teachers who need or want to create their own schemes of work the skills and confidence they need to do so.
Rebecca is now working unpaid to freeshare this training through free-to-access video and needs support for the costs associated with creating these videos, promoting them so teachers know that they exist and know where to find them and promoting the concept of expert teaching in policy development.
More information is available here. A link to the pilot series on expert maths teaching in reception class is here. Videos are now being published at 3pm every Thursday and are available on Rebecca's YouTube channel which is here.

Keep up the good work. The negative reactions you got on your video about Cummings don't reflect the honesty and integrity of what you were saying. Stay strong!
