Story

Fair Isle Bird Observatory has been tragically destroyed in a fire that started on Sunday 10th March 2019. This page has been set up to help cover the costs of items such as artwork and books that the insurance won't cover.

The observatory was only built in 2010 and offered accommodation to visitors of the island. It is vitally important for the seabird research that is carried and for the local community of 60 people that live on Fair Isle. It is a registered Scottish charity (SCO 11160) - I set up this page as they didn't yet have one, but I am nothing to do with the charity myself, I just wanted to help out! They do now have their own that can be found here.

From BBC News: Observatory president Roy Dennis said the building had been "lost to fire", adding it was "absolutely tragic news". A family including two children who live in the flat adjoining the lodge were unhurt. Mr Dennis said: "Thank goodness no loss of life but heartfelt sympathy to David, Susannah and family and the islanders. We will rebuild. We have lost much and will lose a year. Close to my heart - very very sad." (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-47515175)

Please help raise funds to help replace items such as artwork and books for the observatory that the insurance won't cover!
