Story
I work with a number of people who are settling in Oxford with their families, having arrived as refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. They are finding their feet again in a new community and trying to rebuild a life here, while many family members are left behind, missing, or scattered in different parts of the world.
Building a new life is a long and difficult process, especially after traumatic experiences. There are countless obstacles to overcome including learning a new language, learning to read and write (often for the first time), settling children into schools and education, navigating a way through the health system (including treatment for diabetes, heart failure and kidney dialysis) and working to build skills that will lead to employment.
I have seen how hard people are working and how relentless this can be. Last year we managed to secure funding to take 53 people for a day trip to Bournemouth after they talked about how much they would like to experience the British seaside. It gave families the chance to relax in a way that many of us take for granted. It's a small event, but it's one that means a lot. It's the opportunity to do something 'normal' and we all know that time away can help us forget the daily grind!
Since last year, many families have said that they would love to do this trip again but funding sources have dried up. Last Christmas a neighbour suggested crowdfunding and that's why this is being posted! It's a way that we can support each other and show that we can be a welcoming and inclusive community. The money will fund the coach to Bournemouth and any donations, however small, will be very much appreciated. Many thanks!
