    Story

In 2013 at the age of 29 my husband, Fahad Khan was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system, where nerve fibres called myelin is damaged. In MS, your immune system, which helps to fight off infections, mistakes myelin for a foreign body and attacks it. This damages the nerve fibres, either partially or completely, leaving scars known as lesions. This also sometimes causes damage to the nerve fibres themselves. It is this nerve damage that causes the increase in disability that can occur over time. Unlike in other forms of MS, in Primary Progressive MS there are no periods of remission and instead, symptoms are progressive from the onset, worsening over time. In PPMS symptoms include decreased mobility, blindness, respiratory problems and chronic fatigue. Fahad first noticed symptoms of MS when he was just 25 years old and since he was diagnosed in 2013, his symptoms have continued to progress rapidly, causing severe mobility and walking difficulties. Unfortunately MS does not have a cure and as your muscles weaken over time you become less mobile and doing normal things like running or even walking can become a thing of the past. Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) is a procedure that involves removing the harmful immune cells that attack the brain and spinal cord in MS, and then uses a persons own stem cells to effectively re-grow the immune system. Re-booting the immune system in this way has shown to prevent further damage in the brain and spinal cord and is currently the only affective way of stopping the progression of MS in its tracks. With HSCT currently unavailable to us on the NHS, his doctor recommended that we apply to have the treatment abroad. As such, Fahad will undergo HSCT in April 2017, at Clinica Ruiz, an established HSCT facility, in Puebla, Mexico. Please help us with our effort to restore some quality of life for Fahad.
