Story

In 2013 at the age of 29 my husband, Fahad was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system, where nerve fibres called myelin is damaged. In MS, your immune system, which helps to fight off infections, mistakes myelin for a foreign body and attacks it. This damages the nerve fibres, either partially or completely, leaving scars known as lesions. This also sometimes causes damage to nerve fibres. It is this nerve damage that causes the increase in disability that can occur over time. In Primary Progressive MS it has the name because from the first primary symptoms it is progressive. Symptoms gradually get worse over time, rather than appearing as sudden attacks such as relapses. In PPMS symptoms include decreased mobility, blindness, respiratory problems and chronic fatigue which develop over time. Since 2013, Fahads symptoms have got worse and progressed quickly causing mobility and walking difficulties. Unfortunately MS does not have a cure! there are treatments to help manage your symptoms and aids in place to help you walk but nothing that can cure you or take away your MS. As your muscles weaken over time you become less mobile and doing normal things like running or even walking can become a thing of the past. There is nothing available on the NHS as extensive research is still being done with no timescale. We came across Haematooietic Stem Cell Transplantation which is a procedure that involves removing the harmful immune cells that attack the brain and spinal cord in MS, and then uses a persons own stem cells to effectively re-grow the immune system, re-booting the immune system in this way will prevent further damage in the brain and spinal cord. We have been accepted in Mexico for 2017 to have this treatment but at a price! As a young man with a young family Fahad like us all wants the chance to be more actively involved with his children and restore quality of life. Thank you.
