Story

Planning for the Faversham Christmas lights display starts a year before switch on, with 5 working Sundays for our volunteers to put up the display, then the final countdown begins!

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and Hooray! The Christmas lights are on and so is the magic of Christmas for the people and visitors of Faversham!

For 39 years Faversham Community Christmas lights committee and volunteers have been out to piece together the display for 5 Sundays prior to our Switch on, traditionally the last Saturday in November. Our town is unique as no contractor is paid to put up the lights, this is done through a small band of volunteers who give up their own time to give something back to Faversham. We have put them up and taken them down again in various weathers through sunshine, rain, hail, even the odd snow flurry and now a pandemic. Last year we put up as much of the display as we were allowed to following the government guidelines - we even had to wait till April to take them down again - now that was a first!!!

Although we have volunteers to put up the lights and features within the town centre, the electricity still needs to be paid for, as does the hire of equipment used to put this up, as well as the replacement of the cables and features etc. We do receive a grant from Faversham Town Council which helps us on our way to being able to put the lights display on, it unfortunately doesn't pay for all of it especially with the big unknown for this year, the increased energy prices! That's where we turn to the population and friends of Faversham to help donate so we can keep the lights shining bright in the town, ensuring is has a warm glow for the festive period. Every penny that is donated to the lights goes back into the lights, as volunteers we all enjoy bringing joy to the faces of Faversham.

Next year will be our 40th Display and planning has already begun on next years celebrations. We realise this has continued to be a difficult year for familes, and we appreciate any donations you can make!
