Story
In March 2024, we (Faye, Sarah and Poppy) are walking the length of Hadrian's Wall. This is to hopefully raise the amount needed to cover life-prolonging treatment for our friend Jemima, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer in February 2023.
The type of cancer Jemima has is Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer - this cancer does not respond well to Chemotherapy (she has been quoted that chemotherapy is only successful for 5-25% of people with LGSO cancer). Because of this, her oncologist booked her in for surgery in March to remove the cancer along with a complete hysterectomy and removal of parts of her bowel, spleen, bladder and any other organs to which the cancer had spread. However, when the surgeon opened her up, they found the cancer was too close to her organs and had caused them to fuse together. Surgery was not possible. With chemotherapy offered as the only option, this gave her slim odds to beat the cancer.
Fortunately, cancer research is developing at a fast pace; two treatment types offer great hope:
1. A highly promising new drug combination, see https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jun/03/new-drug-combination-offers-ovarian-cancer-breakthrough. Trials have shown these drugs reduce her type of cancer in 60% of cases!
2. T-Cell Therapy. A type of immunotherapy that makes your own immune cells better able to attack cancer. This involves collecting the patient's immune cells, growing large numbers of these cells in the lab, and then giving the cells back. The cheapest she has found this offered is £20,000 in Switzerland.
All these non-NHS-provided treatments cost money. They have real potential to save her life but she has already spent thousands on private healthcare, consultants and supplements to help increase her chances. She needs help. Please donate what you can to give Jemima access to these potentially life-saving options.
