Every day we meet people who are skipping meals so they can feed their children and turning off their cooker or fridge so they can cover other essential costs. People who used to donate to food banks are now needing to seek our support. And the next 12 months look bleaker still.
With temperatures dropping and electricity bills and food costs rising, more families will be going hungry in the coming months. No parent should have to decide between heating their homes or feeding their family.
You can help! Donate money to purchase food items for food banks now.
Money raised on this campaign will be used to purchase items for 2 food banks over 4 months. Each donation will be matched up to £320 by an anonymous donor.
The items will be purchased personally by Atikah every month, starting December. They will be handed over to 1) Southwark Food Bank and 2) Hotric Charity Shop Food Bank. These food banks have been chosen for the diverse families they serve in nearby council estates and due to its proximity.
Many food banks are at breaking point, leaving staff and volunteers “overstretched and exhausted”. A joint statement by organisations representing more than 2,000 UK food banks said they were struggling to meet “unprecedented” demand. Surveys have found nearly one in five families experienced food insecurity in September 2022. This meant more people went hungry in September than during the chaotic first weeks of the Covid lockdown.
