Story
All proceeds will go to Stanground Fire Station
On the 22nd March 1989 09:45am ICI truck carrying almost 850 Kgs of explosives blew up ripping through nearby vehicles and buildings. The truck was turning round in the Vibroplant yard after the driver got lost on the way to the nearby Le Maitre fireworks factory.
More than 100 people were injured by the explosion and 87 of them needed hospital treatment. One firefighter John Humphries sadly died after being hit by a fragment from the blast. He was only about 15 metres from the van when it exploded.
Our factory PPS-Print, Peterborough Printing Servives was completely destroyed but thankfully my father, mother, grandmother and grandfather survived the blast. Just second before the explosion John had told my father to take cover saving his life an no doubt many others.
A Red Plaque, commemorating fallen firefighters & Firefighters 100 Lottery are placing a plaque in Bishops Gardens in memory of John Humphries on the 30 years anniversary.
