The plight of the migrants risking death to cross the Mediterranean in search of a safe haven, has been news for what seems like forever; a situation which is showing no signs of relenting. I like many of you, despair at the world we live in and feel completely powerless to do anything. Of course my thoughts and prayers are with these desperate people but I’ve always wanted to do more, but never known what exactly. For those of you who know me well, heading up big events to raise awareness/funds is something that would be out of my comfort zone so in all honesty I was not sure what I had to offer. However, just a few weeks ago, I came across a post on Facebook which got me thinking that there was something I could do on a practical level, utilising my skills as a dentist.
I have been accepted as a volunteer for an amazing charity; Health Point Foundation (www.healthpointfoundation.org). The charity have set up a dental unit (Dental Point Project) for the camps across Northern Greece, to provide refugees access to emergency dental care. The main dental clinic is in the Diavata camp, where close to 2000 refugees are based. This is the base camp but due to the great need for urgent dental care in many camps, the volunteers regularly visit other military run camps for outreach work.
I am going out for a week over the Christmas period and I hope to be able to go out there again and again if there is a need. To make this happen- I need to raise sufficient funds to take urgently needed supplies and cover costs of the trip. I have set a target of £1500 which I hope you will all help me with.
As a dentist one of things I have always loved, is being able to solve the problems patients come to me with. It is immensely rewarding. Yes I know it is only dental treatment and it is no way going to change the huge challenges these people face, but at the very least I can try ease some of their pain, God willing.
