    Story

FIGHT 4 RUTLAND ” is a campaign group set up by individuals and supportive organisations to preserve Rutland’s unique identity of small honey-coloured villages nestled in gentle open countryside with two historic market towns & Rutland Water nearby. The aim of our campaign is to oppose the new town proposed at St. George’s Barracks, adjacent to Edith Weston.

Rutland’s identity is under threat from planned developments all around, and within, the County.

Rutland County Council has just closed public consultation on the latest version of its “Local Plan”. The ‘Plan proposes the development of 2,315 tightly packed dwellings in an isolated rural area next to Rutland Water: a new town half as big again as Uppingham. RCC have ignored the unprecedented opposition to their plans at the last consultation stage in 2018.

If this ‘Plan is approved, Rutland will have to endure a major building site for over twenty years, impacting on our rural road network and driving away visitors. Despite repeated assurances by the Leader & Deputy Leader of RCC, their infrastructure proposals to support this development have been substantially watered down.

Rutland will be providing thousands more houses than the current Government requirement which is completely unnecessary.

The responses made to this consultation will be seen by the Independent Planning Inspector when the ‘Plan is examined. The responses must follow a particular format challenging the “soundness” of the ‘Plan and its “legal compliance” with prescribed Government Planning processes.

On the 6th of November 2020, despite Covid restrictions, RCC received an unprecedented quantity of representations on the matter. We do however need to continue to raise more funds to cover the next stages anticipated over 2021. This process is expensive and continuing direct Private and also Public Donations through this site are appreciated.

A great day today. New JG donations to the campaign, a cartoon competition designed and built as another fundraiser and a substantial direct gift from a private organisation.
