Story

Recently our Fightworx community experienced a moment that reminded us just how important the people around us truly are.

During a training session at Fightworx Torquay, our friend, coach, and long-time member Will Newland suffered a sudden heart attack on the mats. What followed was an incredible display of calm, courage, and teamwork from the people around him.

Members immediately sprang into action, administering CPR and first aid, and their quick thinking quite literally saved Will’s life.

We are unbelievably grateful that Will is still with us today.

But while he was incredibly lucky in that moment, he now faces a long road to recovery.

Anyone who has trained at Fightworx knows exactly what Will means to the gym. He is a respected coach, a dedicated martial artist, and a genuinely great person who has given years of his time, knowledge, and energy to the team.

Whether coaching wrestling, helping teammates improve, or simply bringing his unique personality to the mats, Will has always been a huge part of what makes our community special.

Now it’s our turn to give something back.

To help support Will during his recovery, Fightworx Torquay is hosting a 24-hour community fundraiser event bringing together the entire martial arts family.

Throughout the event we will be running:

• MMA, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes

• Yoga and mobility sessions

• A CPR course to help more people learn lifesaving skills

• Support from amazing local companies offering services and helping make the event special

The goal is simple: bring the community together and raise funds to help Will get back on his feet.

This fundraiser represents everything Fightworx stands for — teamwork, support, resilience, and community. The same spirit that helped save Will’s life on the day is the same spirit that’s now helping support him through recovery.

If you’ve ever trained with Will, met him, or simply want to support an incredible member of the martial arts community, any donation — big or small — will make a difference.

Thank you for supporting Will and being part of this amazing community.
