Product Review: RCA Rip and Go MP3 Sirius Boombox Stereo System

As many people have started to realize, CDs don't last forever. In face, they seem to be making it about 15 years at the most before dry-rot sets in, and small holes begin appearing throughout the body of the disc. Each hole represents a loss of data. Once enough small holes are present, the CD is no longer playable and is trash. Read more useful "What to Look for when Buying a MP4 or MP3 Player on EBay ".

If you spent a decade investing in a CD collection, only to enters the digital age and buy an mp3 player, it can be frustrating copying all those CDs over. Aside from that, they probably take up a great deal of space, which could be better used by something else.

What if you could copy all of your CDs into your stereo system and then play them whenever you want, without a CD? It would save a lot of space, and you would no longer have to worry about the condition of your discs. That is exactly what RCA wants to offer with their Rip and Go Sirius MP3 stereo system. Find out why "Creative Labs NOMAD MuVo 4 GB MP3 Player - A Failed Attempt to Rival the IPod Mini".

The Rip and Go stereo allows users to insert a CD and copy it in real time. The system then saves it to the internal memory, and allows you to listen to it whenever you want, sans CD. If you interested in purchasing this stereo, read the following review to see if its work it's $150 price tag.

Body

At first glance, this system appears attractive. It's large speakers are a stylish dark/light gray combo, and the speakers themselves are beveled with a port-like ring. The actual radio unit is rectangular and light gray, with a large silver dial in the center and smaller silver control buttons scattered about the face of the player.

The screen on the device is a basic LCD with a blue background and black text. The text on the screen is large enough for someone with poorer vision to see.

Features

The RCA Rip and Go draws 160 watts of power, and features FM radio, a 5-CD changer, an SD card slot for storage, and a small flash player (128) that connects to the system for on-the-go listening whenever you want it.

The device can take three different types of music CDs: standard, MP3 and WMA CDs, and CD-R/RW. In addition, you can add music to either the included mp3 player and playback from that, or you can add music to an SD card and insert it into the stereo for playback.

Music Quality

The music quality depends entirely on what you are listening to. For CDs and high-quality MP3s, the audio quality of the Rip and Go is outstanding. On the other hand, if you copy a CD using the system, the sound isn't nearly as good. This is because the quality level of the ripped songs is lowered so that more can fit on the small capacity player. This strips out a lot of the quality, and leaves you with a tinny, lossy song.

Issues

The recording process leaves a lot to be desired. Ripping can only happen in real time, meaning it takes the entire time of the CD to copy. If you're copying a CD with two hours of music on it, it will take two hours to copy.

Any songs ripped will have lower quality than most downloads, as it is ripped at 128kb exclusively.

Conclusion

If you want a stereo that is cheap and you mostly wish to play CDs and radio, then the RCA Rip and Go will work. If you're planning on popping in all your CDs and ripping them to an internal hard drive for playback whenever, then reconsider. You can copy CDs, but they won't sound nearly as good, and there is no internal hard drive. You will need to invest in your own SD card.
