On December 3rd, I will be cutting off some of my trademark, ginger hair in a bid to raise funds for the ENT surgical unit at Craigavon hospital. The hair will be used to create a wig for a child undergoing cancer treatment.

Thyroid surgery is a major part of the treatment process for thyroid cancer patients and often a process that can strike fear in the patient about to undergo the procedure. I know this only too well, having undergone two thyroid procedures at Craigavon hospital, within the past two months, after a diagnosis of thyroid cancer attempted to rock my world.

Having open surgery on your neck is never going to be a pleasant thought and there are always going to be associated risk factors such as damage to your vocal chords etc. However, the surgical team at Craigavon hospital do an amazing job at relaxing and reassuring the patient, providing the utmost care for them both during and after the thyroid procedure. They are real - life heroes and the advanced surgical equipment they use is helping to prolong/save the lives of thyroid cancer patients. So I want to give something back...

From now until 3rd December, I am urging other people to give something up for thyroid cancer and to donate the money to this page. For e.g. giving up your cup of coffee each morning for one week could help to raise up to £14 towards vital ENT theatre equipment. All funds raised will be presented to the ENT surgical theatre at the beginning of December.
