Story

In addition to donations via this page, donations have been made directly to the Parish Council for which weaver very grateful. As such, could we say 'Thank you' to Tesco in Goole, Sykehouse Show, Sykehouse Parish Council, the residents of Braithwell, Mr & Mrs Quinton, Decision Hair & Beauty, the residents of Norton, and the customers go The Old Butchers Cafe - a further £4960.91. Amazing!! Thank you!!!

On the evening of Friday 8th November, after being advised by the Environment Agency that there was no danger of flooding - the village of Fishlake was overwhelmed by a torrent of water from the River Don.

The community, local farmers, the Hare & Hounds pub, the Old Butchers Cafe, and adjacent communities have all been amazing, with everyone doing their best to assist. Special mention for the Fire & Rescue Services who have been brought in from North Wales, West Midlands and Cumbria. Absolutely fantastic people to whom the village will always be immensely grateful.

Food and supplies have been delivered to St Cuthbert's Church for distribution, and while there is devastation throughout the village, it has been heartwarming to receive such strong support from total strangers. Much of the recovery effort has been in the neighbouring village of Stainforth, an area of limited wealth, but where the residents have dug deep to assist us. Absolutely brilliant!!

Whilst we are doing our best to sort the issues in the village, the decimation is immense and will take many months, if not years, to fully recover. While spirits remain remarkably high, we have now begun to encounter a new problem - insurance companies are now indicating that flood damage is not included within the general cover. We even have an instance of a policy, (which did include flood cover), being renewed with flood cover excluded on the renewal - without the insured being made aware!

My name is Dean Edwards, and I'm a Fishlake resident. My family and I have been extremely fortunate. We are surrounded by water, and cannot leave the village, but, while the water came within and inch or two of flooding our property, so far we are dry. The majority of our friends and neighbours have been less fortunate, and we would like to get them back into their homes as soon as possible.

All monies donated will go to restoring homes for the elderly and vulnerable, and those who have found themselves unsupported by insurers, at least back to a basic level of habitation. Any surplus funds will be given to our friends at Bentley, and other communities suffering similarly. Thank you for your support. Appreciated.

Time passes and with the water now gone, the clean up is in full swing. Most insurers have now accepted claims, although there are a few debates in progress. An uncomfortably high number of residents advised their cover does not include flooding!! First wave of house clearances have been completed, though depressing to see a family's belongings dumped at the side of the road awaiting collection. Many properties are alive with the sound of driers and dehumidifiers and once dry can move to the next stage. Getting there but still a long way to go!

I'm trying to send a 'thank you' to everyone who has offered support through our Justgiving page, but the reply I am allowed to post can only be relatively brief. To everyone who has donated, at a time when the village is at a low ebb, your kind consideration means so much. We have had contact from people who previously lived in the village, who have friends or family here, and from total strangers who just want to help. I can be a belligerent old cuss, but the messages of support are truly heartwarming. Fishlake cannot thank you all enough xx

Apologies to all that I have been lapse with updates. Water has now virtually gone from the village though pumps are still hard at work draining the surrounding fields. The farmers are continuing to struggle in very difficult circumstances. Many residents have returned over recent days to view their property. Some have relatively minor damage, but many more have properties where the ground floor is totally devastated. Most are being advised that it will be at least 6 months before properties will be restored, and more likely to be longer.
