Story

EDIT: After a major scare over Opal's life, she had to go to a specialist vet, who is more confident she will come through the surgery and recovery without excessive psychological trauma. He also thinks he can save her leg. With the right physio, we are hoping to avoid such major surgery on the other leg, which is also affected. She's had the second operation, and is in her recovery now. She's such a strong, brave pup, staying optimistic even through such significant surgery. It was touch and go, but we still believe she can have a good quality of life.
Opal is my sister Laura’s beloved 4 month old border collie puppy. Best friends with her 1 year old daughter, Effy, this little dog has shown nothing but love and patience. She is very special indeed.
Sadly, Opal has developed Short Ulna Syndrome. This is an uncommon angular limb deformity known to affect puppies following injury. One of her front legs is growing crooked as her bones have stopped growing properly, which will result in one leg being shorter than the other. This condition means she lives in pain at the moment, and hasn't been able to go on a walk for 3 weeks.
She desperately needs specialist treatment to correct her bones. Without surgery her leg will continue to grow incorrectly and she will be disabled and in pain for the rest of her life. With treatment and proper aftercare, Opal has a fighting chance at a normal life. Unfortunately, it is not covered by insurance.
Laura and her family are doing everything they can to raise the money. She is selling many of her belongings. Her 13 year old daughter is planning a cake sale at her school. But, the surgery and resulting aftercare will cost a lot more than can realistically be raised in this way.
My sister is very careful with money, and has already put her life savings into the surgery. Opal will need further scans and intensive physiotherapy once she has recovered from the operation. I am trying to raise the funds for this on her behalf.
Opal is currently in cage confinement with her leg in a splint. A 4 month old puppy should be exploring the world and playing with her family! She will never lead a normal life if we don't save her leg.
Even the smallest donation will go a long way to raising the funds needed to help this amazing puppy. Money raised will go directly towards her surgery, scans and physiotherapy.
