Emergencies

Story

This is the home of my friend Buba Keita Carr. Buba lives in a village in Gambia and the picture shows him with some of his family members outsite his home.

As you can see, the roof of Buba’s home is in a state of disrepair and the rainy season is about to start. Like the majority of Gambian people, Buba is very poor. Those of you who have holidayed in that country will have seen for yourselves just how poor the majority of the people are. Buba works, he has a job paddling a long, narrow boat that takes tourists on river trips, but this job pays just enough for him to keep his family fed and clothed, there is no money left over for energencies like fixing his roof.

If it is left in this state when the rains come - and they are due very soon now - the house will flood and Buba is worried that the sandstone walls may crumble and collapse. He doesn’t ask for much, just enough funds to enable him to buy a tarpaulin or other such waterproof sheet that can be used to cover his home and keep the rain out. This will cost in the region of £500 ($800). I would like to think that we can go one step further and raise enough for him to replace the corrugated iron sheets altogether and have a completely new roof, which will cost around £800. Please help by either making a small donation, as small as £1 (or $1 or €1), more would be better, or by sharing this to give others the chance to help this man to keep a roof over his and his family’s head. You could, of course, do both - donate and share.

Thank you.
