Story

The Friends of Malheur NWR have been presented with the privlidged opportunity to sponsor the Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) Tribal Steward Program to spend 1 week of their time at Malheur NWR this summer. This partnership through the Oregon Natural Desert Association will given a revoluntionary experience to 6 local young adults from the Burns-Paiute and Warms Springs Tribes. We are honored to be a part of it and hope you will too!

The Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth and young adults to become successful, resilient members of their communities. To achieve this, NYC provides a variety of outdoors, conservation-specific programs to youth and young adults throughout the Northwest emphasizing education, leadership, and personal growth.

Tribal Stewards model is a program rooted in cultural and ancestral knowledge of the Northwest tribal communities. Tribal Stewards works closely with tribal communities to engage Native American participants in our traditional Youth Corps Camping model. To date, there are collaborative project efforts with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Tribe, Burns Paiute Tribe, Chemawa Indian School and Shoshone Bannock Tribe.
