Story
I have been part of the Girl Guiding Association for many years, and I am now very lucky to have the opportunity to travel to Zambia for 4 weeks in July 2018 with Dorset Girl Guides to volunteer at a medical centre and meet with Zambian Girl Guides.
We will take part in a variety of health based projects based in and around Kitwe, the second largest city in Zambia. We will be working in help clinics with tasks such as recording malaria test results and doing vaccine paperwork as well as helping in clinics for new mothers and teaching basic health and hygiene to young children, including the importance of brushing their teeth and washing their hands. We will be going with day outreach clinics to rural areas to help with temporary doctor’s clinics or at baby clinics for people who don’t have access to basic health services all the time. We will be helping to teach basic first aid and work with children our own age (16-20) teaching about personal hygiene, problems faced during puberty and the importance of vaccines, safe sex and knowing about your body and how it works. We will be based with a doctor from Kitwe Hospital but will also help at volunteer and private clinics.
We arrive in Lusaka, the capital, where we stay the night, before 2 days of travelling to reach Kitwe. After 12-14 days volunteering in Kitwe we return to Lusaka where we will spend a few days with members of Girl Guiding Zambia to learn about their culture and way of life and go on day trips to local land marks. We will finish the trip with a day safari at Livingstone National Park and finally visit Victoria Falls before coming back to the UK. In total we will have spent just under a month in Zambia.
I have to fundraise over £3000 for the trip and I am planning to do this by bag packing at local supermarkets, selling my old toys and books at car boot sales, having cake sales, making and selling Christmas decorations, baby sitting and applying for grants from charitable funds at supermarkets etc and donations from local businesses.
If you would like to help me with my fundraising I would be very grateful and any donations will be very much appreciated.

Enjoy your trip Fran, and learn a lot about how other less fortunate children live their lives in this interesting country. Very best wishes.
