Story

On September 6th I was 50 years old.

So perhaps all of this is a mid-life crisis, a desperate attempt to lose weight, a chance to raise money for some charities I care about, or all of the above! Anyway …

Throughout 2020 I have been cycling towards 5,000 kilometres - all without leaving Walsingham House at Abbotswick, and all to benefit four brilliant charities.

I was hoping to get on the training bike every day, for 20-25km/day. Then I got Covid-19 so I had no energy for a while. Over the summer there was some sad and difficult situations, so by the time I got to September 6th I had cycled ... 1250km!

Undaunted, I have a new plan ... I am now cycling 10km a day, so that by the time I finish being 50, I will have reached those 5,000km!

I have extended the finish date to Sept 5th 2021, and I'll update every time I pass another 500km - approx every 50 days!

Can you sponsor me? Every little bit helps! 0.1p/km = £5, 1p/km = £50.

The charities who will benefit are:

The Brentwood Catholic Children's Society,

especially as they develop their work to support children and young people struggling with issues of mental health. The BCCS offer counselling support, and training sessions for those working with children and young people. Their work is often - necessarily - very discreet. I have seen the effects of their support first hand, and it is magnificent.

HCPT Group 709 Bursaries.

HCPT take children with additional needs to Lourdes each Easter, and Group 709 are a group of student age volunteers who help in many different ways during the week. However, since many have limited finance, this will help them towards the cost of their fare - typically £550+. The week in Lourdes transforms lives - both for the children, and for those who look after them.

Help Refugees.

From Calais to Greece, across the Mediterranean and beyond, Help Refugees are at the front line of providing basic support, dignity and care for some of the most vulnerable people in the world. I have seen their work first hand, and what they do is utterly amazing. It is volunteer-led and life-saving.

Walsingham House at Abbotswick

is where I live and work. We welcome four thousand children and young people here, to enjoy retreats centred in faith and offering peace, space, teamwork, creativity, prayer and challenge. We would love to welcome more, but are full to capacity. The money from the cycling will be "seed funding" to help us see whether we could build some extra retreat facilities on our wonderful countryside site.

Thank you for anything that you give.

Last week I turned 50 ... and I had cycled 1,250km. Covid had something to do with it, and a few other unexpected troubles in recent months. BUT undaunted I am continuing to cycle, 10km/day, so that by the time I finish being 50, I'll have reached those 5,000km. And who knows, by then we may even be able to gather to celebrate. For now, THANK YOU for all your donations - with cheque and cash donations the current total is just over £2,500! Which is also an incentive to keep pedalling!

It has been a while since the last update - thanks to a little touch of Covid-19! But I am now back on the bike and today passed 1000km! I've extended the time to the whole of 2020 to reach 5,000km - let's hope lockdown at least gives a chance to add a few km. These charities need the money more than ever now. THANK YOU so much to everyone who has donated so far - £1,150 on this page, plus about £500 in cheques and cash. So hopefully £5000 target will happen, as well as 5000km target! Many blessings to you - stay safe & well Fr Dominic

Hi - it has been a slow start as I have pedalled through wind, rain, hail and snow - sometimes in the same day - but today I am passing 700km! I am upping the amount on the days I cycle, to between 30-40km, to hopefully keep on target. And THANK YOU so much for the sponsorship - it is close to £1000 on JustGiving and I have a further £500 in cash and cheques. 7 months to go …. 4300 miles to go ….
