Story
We are raising £50,000 to help victims of the massive flooding in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Hundreds of people have died, with thousands left homeless; and over 600 are unaccounted for.
Heavy rains in the West African city of Freetown in Sierra Leone, caused major landslide on the Sugar Loaf Mountain of the city on the 13th and 14th of August 2017. Over 300 of the recovered bodies were buried yesterday in Waterloo, Freetown. Hundreds of people are still buried underneath the mud, as efforts are made to recover bodies. The Connaught Hospital mortuary continues to receive the remains of children and their parents. Over 150 of the 300 buried yesterday – Thursday, 17th August are children.
About 1,000 homes were destroyed – many remain covered in deep mud with people buried inside. Emergency services are trying hard to rescue anyone still alive, though hope is fading fast.
Sierra Leone Red Cross Society spokesman, Mr. Abu Bakarr Tarawallie says: "We estimate that at least 3,000 people are homeless ... they need shelter, medical assistance and food. We are also fearful of outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and typhoid. We can only hope that this does not happen."
This is why I am asking for your kind donation to help victims and their families. All donations will be channelled through the International Humanitarian Organisations and local NGOs that are working hard in Sierra Leone to save lives, improve quality of life, reduce poverty, and create a better environment.
Fifteen years ago, saw the end of a brutal ten year rebel war, which left over 100,000 dead and thousands of people homeless.
Then came the deadly Ebola virus in 2014, which took the lives of over 4,000 people. Sierra Leone is one of the poorest nations in the world, with most people earning less than 60 British Pence a day. More than 40% of newly born children will not live to see their fifth birthday; and over 30% of pregnant women die during or after child birth.
And now heavy rains have taken its toll on a nation that is almost collapsing under the weight of poverty. The landslides which took place on the 13th and 14th August 2017, have left thousands of people homeless, with hundreds dead. Food, clean drinking water, and clothing are now needed to help those that have lost everything.
Please help. And thank you for your kind donation. All funds raised will go directly to victims, through the International Humanitarian Organisations and local NGOs that are saving lives, improve quality of life, reduce poverty, and create a better environment in Sierra Leone.

2 years agoRescue workers are continue to dig the disaster site which stretches along a few miles along the foot of the Sugar Loaf mountain and Hill Station. Several bodies have been found near the beach along the Atlantic Coastal waters of Freetown. Over 350 victims were laid to rest last Thursday, 17th of August 2017, in a mass multi-faith burial which took place in Waterloo, in the east of the capital. 200 of those laid to rest are children. Over 600 people are yet to be accounted for, presumed buried under the tons of mud and rocks.

About 3,000 people are believed to be displaced. 71 rescued injured About 600 people still missing. There are fears that corpses still trapped in the rubble and mud pose serious risk of disease such as Cholera, Diarrhoea and Typhoid.
