Story

My name is Freya McGlone I am 20 years old. I have Cerebral Palsy and Autism, two quite disabling conditions which have not stopped me having a go at keeping active and competitive. I have been competing and training as a T36 sprinter but struggle to go fast as the harder I try the more I fall over. I have made friends at different local and National events but have struggled to keep up. I have competed for Derwentside Athletic Club for a number of years.

It was suggested I try Frame Running which gives me more support, it may even allow me to do longer events like fun runs. I have been hiring one from CP sport but they need it back. I have heard that Frame running is becoming more popular and more events are being organised that people like myself can join in. It is even being included in the next Paralympics. CP sport connected me with a coach called Philip Fleetwood who has been helping me in this new event. I am a member of Derwentside Athletics Club where my Mum coaches the “ability” section. Margaret and Paul Smith at Chester-Le -Street AC also help coach and that club are very supportive in allowing me to join there track sessions.

For this reason I decided to do a fund raising walk from Derwentside AC ( NDC Stanley) down to Chester-Le-Street AC (riverside stadium) which is 8.3 miles! I will be using my walking frame and have picked the downhill route! My fellow athletes have offered to join me as it will be a big challenge and take quite a few hours.

Route and time

the walk is on 6th june 2021

we start at NDA Stanley at 9am

walking down the A693 to the underpass at the West Pelton road. We cross over to Beamish and join the cycle path towards Chester le Street taking the right hand fork. At Hilda park we drop down some steep steps to walk into town near Tesco then join the Riverside park at the bottom. We then walk up through the park to the Riverside track.
