Story
Freya was just shy of 11 weeks old when she was first admitted into hospital with a hemoglobin level of just 13. Typically, it should be above 120. At the time, she needed several life-saving treatments, including resuscitation and a stay in the PICU. Several months later after various tests and exams, she was diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anaemia Syndrome. An extremely rare condition that prevents her bone marrow from producing red blood cells.
Since then, Freya has undergone 73 red blood transfusions. Cannulas. Two failed steroid trials. Various medicines. Endless doctor visits. Consultants and specialists at three different hospitals. X-rays. Scans. Several surgeries. A Port-a-cath. Two Hickman lines. Several MRIs. Bone marrow aspirations. Growth issues. Digestive issues. A further diagnosis of Fanconis Syndrome. And a severe needle phobia from the countless blood draws, and at home needle-based treatments.
Next, Freya is having a bone marrow transplant.
A BMT involves a lengthy stay in hospital whilst she has high dose chemotherapy and immunotherapy to make space within her existing bone marrow. We'll then fill that gap with the bone marrow of a German donor. This will be an extremely complex and high-risk procedure. Freya will be at risk from complications such as infections, Graft versus host disease complications in her liver, brain, kidneys, and mucosistis.
A transplant will not cure Freyas diagnosis of DBAS, If it goes well, it will take away her need for three weekly transfusions. It's not without risks and challenges, but without it Freya will not have the longevity and quality of life that she deserves.
Freya is at a stage in her life where she loves all things Disney, She's also a total thrill seeker and loves nothing more than the big rollacoasters. The money raised here will go towards taking her to Disneyland Paris.
Additional funds raised will buy toys for the play team at LGI children's hospital.
