Story

Feldman Ecopark, (Featured in "Checkpoint Zoo"), located on the outskirts of Kharkiv City, Ukraine, was once a vibrant sanctuary for over 5,000 animals representing 300 species. Before the war, it was not only a haven for wildlife but also a place of healing and learning. The zoo ran vital rehabilitation programs for animals in need of care and rehoming, and it offered inclusive educational experiences for children, including those with special educational and physical needs.

However, everything changed in 2022, when the zoo found itself at the frontline of the Russian invasion. What had been a place of peace and recovery became a battleground. In the face of unimaginable danger, a courageous rescue mission was launched to save the animals trapped inside. Over the course of 199 harrowing days, approximately 4,750 animals were successfully evacuated.

Tragically, the cost of this bravery was high. Six selfless volunteers lost their lives, and around 300 animals perished during the siege. Their sacrifice and the resilience of those who fought to protect life in all its forms are now honored in an award-winning documentary that tells the story of this extraordinary rescue.

Disclaimer: The creators of the documentary do not endorse this page. The clip is shared solely to shed light on the immense challenges faced by Checkpoint Zoo.

Today, the zoo is slowly beginning to reopen, but the scars of war remain deeply etched into its infrastructure and daily operations. Much of the zoo was destroyed, and rebuilding is a lengthy and challenging process. Today I invite you to support that journey - to help restore a place that once offered safety, healing, education and sanctuary to both animals and children.

Now, more than ever, Feldman Ecopark plays a critical role in rehabilitating sick and injured animals from war-affected regions. It also continues its mission to support children—especially those who have been deeply impacted by the conflict—through educational and therapeutic programs. However, many enclosures are damaged, forcing some animals to remain indoors all day. Classrooms lack power, and countless other essentials are still missing.

The park does not charge for entry, it survives purely on donations and from its benefactors. Every donation goes directly to the park administrators, and I welcome full transparency and scrutiny of all funds raised. Your support helps bring hope and healing back to a place that has given so much.
