Story
Following Hurricane Maria and the devastating effects left in its wake, the Friends of Dominica UK has been set up with the primary aim of helping those most affected. With a long term focus of rejuvenation, a short term goal has been established to create a registered charity. A formal committee will be put in place, to ensure that with a clear plan of action, funds will be directly passed to the local communities for their specific needs.
Marlene Edmunds was living in Dominica at the time that the Hurricane hit. With her home in ruins she made the decision to journey back to England, knowing that her efforts to help rebuild her community would be best used from the UK. It is her drive and vision that has helped establish the Friends of Dominica UK and it will be with her direction that the committee will take its lead to ensure that the fundraising efforts are focused in the required areas.
With many children now being sent away from the island to be able to continue their education, an initial focus has been made to help the local school get back up and running. Not only will this give children stability and structure to help them restore the natural order of their lives, it will also be a key part of shaping the future adults of Dominica, and help them to understand the importance of overcoming adversity. With the help of everyone we know we feel sure that we can make all of us a Friend of Dominica and ensure that this great island is restored to it’s natural beauty.
