Story
The last symbol to the sacrifice of 598 British and Commonwealth airman who served at a Lincolnshire airfield in World War II is in jeopardy due to subsidence. The memorial at former RAF Spilsby, located on a fire tender shedbase, is slowly sinking.
Although the site had remained stable for over twenty years the heavier rainfall of recent times has caused the ground beneath the concrete base to sink. This subsidence puts the inscribed stone memorial on top of the concrete in a vulnerable position which would eventually lead to losing the historical tribute that has been so carefully maintained for many years.
On the advice of the original installers of the inscribed stones, it will be necessary to move the memorial onto a new steel reinforced foundation.Due to the nature of construction it is not possible to save the base stones. These will be sacrificed to retain the four more important inscribed stones. A new Portland Stone base will be manufactured and installed onto the newly constructed foundation.
We (The Friends of RAF Spilsby) feel it is important to act now before there is any further decline in this special memorial. To lose it is to end the story of all the men and women who served on the airfield during the bomber campaign.
The “ask”, is a massive ask, we need to raise £19,000 to save this memorial for future generations. Any donation, no matter how small is hugely appreciated. Thank you for your time in reading this and should you choose to donate, we extend our upmost gratitude to you from all of ‘The Friends at RAF Spilsby’.
