Story

Some of you may know about the plight of the Greenwood Road, Meols, telephone box that was removed by BT in August. The phone box has major importance for fans of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) as it featured in their early hit, 'Red Frame White Light', and included the telephone number of the box - 632 3003. This box is a cultural icon for local fans and for fans all over the world who flock to Meols to visit it and take photos. Even if you're not a fan, there are lots of economic benefits to local people with those visiting fans spending money locally when they visit. Personally, I am a huge OMD fan but I also love the look of these boxes and think of them as a thing of beauty in our local landscape.

We have successfully campaigned to get the phone box back - Wirral Council have bought it and are paying for it to be reinstalled as a non-working box.

There is a 'Friends of 632 3003' Group and when the box comes back, we will be working together to reinstate it and turning it into a mini museum to showcase OMD and other local Hoylake/Meols culture.

As part of this, we want to restore the phone box to what it was like in 1980 when the song was in the charts. I am reaching out to all of you to help - the Group is desperately trying raise funds and to get hold of an old pay on answer phone that takes the 2ps and 10ps Also, we are trying to get our hands on an old Liverpool and surrounding area grey phone directory and a large old style yellow pages - ideally from early 1980s if anyone can donate such items to such a worthy cause please get in touch.
