We are the Friends of Bishopthorpe Library, a group dedicated to organizing events and raising funds to support our local library, which we believe is an important community space for everyone in Bishopthorpe.

The library has been in the same location since just after WWII, starting in an air raid shelter, and the current building has been serving the community since 1968. It offers books, internet access, and activities for all ages, as well as a welcoming space to meet and chat. Last year, it saw over 23,800 visits and hosted events like Lego club, story time, and a reading group for adults.

After 56 years, the building is in dire need of repairs, especially as the window frames are rotting and not just an eyesore but causing heat loss, leading to high energy bills. We’ve been raising funds for new windows and thanks to generous donations, we’ve already replaced the windows and doors to the sensory garden.

We still need £12,000 to replace the rest of the windows and have raised over £2,000 through book sales, a quiz night, and other donations. We're now running a Just Giving campaign to reach our goal, hoping to make the library warmer and more energy-efficient by next winter. That’s where you come in...
