The Downham Montessori Nursery School was founded by its present owner, Elizabeth Laffeaty-Sharpe, in 1984 for children aged 2 to 5 years. It was in 1988, responding to parental request, the Primary School was opened in an adjoining building. Due to increasing demand for places at the school it has grown considerably.

The Friends of Downham Prep have been formed to be a dedicated group of individuals who have come together to support the school. Their primary mission is to raise funds for the school, enabling it to provide an enriched educational experience for its students. Through various fundraising activities and initiatives, The Friends of Downham Prep work tirelessly to contribute to the school's success and the overall well-being of the parents, students, teachers and administrative staff, fostering a vibrant and thriving educational community. Their commitment reflects the importance of collective involvement and collaboration in ensuring the continued growth and success of Downham Preparatory School And Montessori Nursery.
