Story

The ruins of St Margaret’s form an iconic centre piece of West Raynham in North Norfolk, dating back to Norman times.

They are located adjacent to the Registered Park of Raynham Hall, the wider landscape of the Upper Wensum Valley and steeped in centuries of associated local history.

This is such a special place for people who live here and the increasing numbers of visitors from the wider area and further afield. That is why so many local people and partner bodies support and have contributed to our efforts to conserve this precious site.

But we need your help.

The ruins are in a precarious state and are likely to collapse altogether without remedial work and stabilisation. They are registered as a "heritage at risk site" with Historic England.

We are raising funds for immediate work to secure the site ahead of repairs and to complete a feasibility study ahead of applying for a grant to not only secure the sites future, but to create a centre of excellence in centre for learning opportunities for young professionals in stone masonry and restoration, churchyard management, high demand yet declining skills, and wider opportunities for people to learn green skills related to habitat management and species identification, using our Village spaces and facilities.

Over the last five years, with the enthusiastic help of local volunteers, we have been restoring a hay meadow environment and improving habitat for wildlife. Our aim is for local people and visitors to enjoy, appreciate and understand the context of the site, the history of the ruins and the current environmental initiatives.

This is an increasingly popular location; it is a beautiful place to visit and appreciate. It provides a haven for flora and fauna. It is a place that provides enormous sense of peace and wellbeing.

Our projects are driven and managed by the St Margaret’s (in ruins) Conservation Group, a not-for-profit association formed and supported by residents.

From our ‘membership’ we draw upon expertise in ecology, IT, design, writing, art, history, fundraising and marketing, all on a voluntary basis.

If you are ever heading this way, please do come and visit this beautiful site.
