Story

The Anchor Inn is Mistley's last remaining pub, and the owner has put it up for sale. With two pubs closing every day in the UK, we’re a passionate group of local residents who have come together to buck the trend.

As Stephen Fry aptly puts it:

Here's an idea - let's save endangered, beloved pubs by buying them together (Stephen Fry, 2020)

Friends of the Mistley Anchor Working Group

We are a working group who have come together to save and revive Mistley's only pub. We meet on Zoom each week. If you'd like to join us, we'd love to have you on board

The Mistley Anchor is steeped in history

Our working group has discovered a reference to an 'Anchor' in Mistley dated October 5th 1866, when The Essex Standard reported on an inquest held there. Since then the Anchor Inn has featured in more news articles, been run by many a landlord and landlady (including widow Rosetta Mullett in 1911), and occupied various sites in the area.

For some time The Anchor Inn occupied a prominent position at the top of Mistley Hill on the road to Bradfield, sitting on the corner of the old gravel pit where the Stourview estate is today. We can say that The Anchor Inn has traded in Mistley for at least 150 years, possibly many more.

Our community looks forward to The Anchor keeping it's doors open for generations to come. With that in mind, we've formed a working group, 'Friends of the Mistley Anchor' to save and revive our historic pub. Our vision is to buy The Mistley Anchor with - and for - our community.

Our aim: A pub for the village, run as a hub by the village (Friends of the Mistley Anchor)

150 Years of The Anchor

Mistley locals and 'working group' members Sarah and John (pictured below) are looking forward to helping create a community hub in our village.

Back our campaign

Here’s your unique chance to join us and get involved. Back our campaign - donate to save and revive Mistley's only pub!

We’ve had a fantastic response to our campaign, thank you for your encouragement and generous support! Now things get real - we’ll be using the funds to set ourselves up as a company and join the Plunkett Foundation who support and back many a successful community pub.

We'll be doing everything we can to raise awareness and to find out what you all think. You’ll soon be getting a survey through your letterbox to find out your opinion on the role a community led pub could play in Mistley - we look forward to hearing your ideas. And of course we'll be holding a post-covid launch do when we can. We’re a community pub in the making, after all...!
